Other people’s toxic energy has nothing to do with you

Sherre Webb

If you are someone who is focused on being a positive force in the world with intentions of adding value to other people’s lives, it may seem that you are a rare commodity in a world that seems to be focused on the opposite. You don’t have to look very far to find bad news. It’s everywhere on social media and apparently is the main subject of the news that is broadcasted 24/7. Sometimes it is impossible to escape negative people and the energy they emit, as in the case of a toxic work environment but it is possible to control how you react.

Everyone has someone in their life or knows of someone who constantly carries negative energy. These are the people you try to keep at a distance or find a way to avoid altogether; but what do you do when that someone can’t be completely avoided? If it’s someone who is close to you, their toxic behavior and unfair treatment towards you can affect your confidence and chip away at your self-esteem, so how do you deal with these toxic people? I have had my fair share of being surrounded by toxic people. Over the years, I have found different ways that have helped me deal with toxic people and to this day, these same techniques continue to help me maneuver around them.

If you find yourself feeling frustrated every time you are around a certain person or group of people, I am going to give you two powerful ways to free yourself from the tricks that toxic people use to reel you into their negative world, so keep reading because they aren’t what you may think.

Keys to Dealing with Toxic People and How to Free Yourself:

You may be wondering how it is possible for the solution to free yourself from negative people only requires two steps. After all, this is something that the majority of people must deal with regularly, but it is possible so let’s get right to it.

The first thing you should do if you ever want to free yourself from the negative impact toxic people seem to have perfected is:

  • Accept the person.
    • Now, your first reaction to this solution may have been “Come again..?” or “Excuse me?” or you may still be in disbelief, but stay with and I’ll explain.
      • When you acknowledge and admit to yourself that the toxic person is exactly who they show you they are, it becomes easy to accept that person for exactly who they are. No longer will you take on their toxicity as your own issue because it’s not. You will come to terms and understand that their toxicity is none of your business.
Yes, really.

The 2nd thing you should do to free yourself from being affected by a toxic person’s behavior is:

  • Become Non-Reactive
    • You may be wondering how in the world do you do this. Again, stick with me a bit longer and I’ll give you a simple explanation.
      • In a nutshell, being non-reactive means neutralizing your emotions when dealing with toxic individuals. It takes a bit of practice and requires you to prepare your mind before encountering the toxic person but trust me, it works. The more you practice, the quicker you will learn to master this skill.

That’s it. Yes, really, that’s it. I know I made these techniques sound simple but in actuality, they require you to change your thought processes. This is one of those “easier said than done” suggestions, but know that it’s not impossible. Try it for 30 days and you will see a change in how you choose to respond not only to toxic people but to negativity in general.
