TURN YOUR “I hope…”
INTO YOUR “I believe…”
THEN BELIEVE “I will…”
TO BECOME YOUR “I am…”– Sherre Webb
I HOPE, I believe, I will, I am…
…and in that order.
Whatever it is you aspire to become that will allow you to walk in your purpose, eventually leading to a much bigger mission, will most likely start with you just hoping you can accomplish the goal.
My journey into writing began much later in my life – I was an adult and was unaware I held a gift in writing. Instead of writing my thoughts down, I would allow a million and one random thoughts to constantly run through my mind. Well, that just about drove me crazy – until one day, my sister gave me a journal. I wonder now if it was because I would talk her ears off about any and everything.
She suggested that I write my thoughts down as a way to express myself and so, I did.
Years later, she came to me, once again, with a suggestion: share my thoughts with others through blogging and on this note, I paused.
Is there something in your life that you know you should be doing or at least attempting to try but you’re not doing it?
I will be honest, before I started this journey of writing, I was extremely hesitant. I didn’t know what I was doing, or how to get started. All my reasons for hitting the pause button came down to one word and may be the same reason you or someone you know isn’t living up to their full potential: Fear
This word is getting thrown around like confetti nowadays without us taking a serious step back and analyzing where the root of our fears are coming from. If you can figure that part out, you can then dismantle the false beliefs that lead to the fear and take actionable steps that will stop its control over your life.
My fear was rooted in a lack of confidence. How did I figure that out? I took a step back and realized the truth of why I hesitated to write: the root of my fear was I cared what people would think. For me, writing meant that I had to be vulnerable and that made me uncomfortable. I was afraid of sounding stupid or sounding like I didn’t know what I was talking about. Furthermore, I thought “Why would anybody want to read what I have to say?”
If there is something you wished you could do or have someday, but you keep hitting the pause button on that thing while coming up with excuses as to why you can’t…more than likely, the reason boils down to one word: fear
Eventually, I decided I would give this writing thing a shot and I must say, the very first thing I thought before embarking upon my new journey was “I hope…”
I don’t remember exactly what words came after “I hope”, but that’s where my journey into blogging started. I wasn’t sure I could do it, but obviously, my sister saw something in me that I didn’t, and so…I hoped.
It took a couple of months before I wrote my first article; it took that long for me to begin to believe that I could do it and actually had something to say that could possibly touch the life of another person.
I BELIEVE in myself are the words that you must be able to say sincerely to yourself before becoming the person you want to be. Without belief in yourself and your abilities, nothing will change. Whatever you think about yourself is exactly who you are and will become. Period.
Fundamentally, I knew I could do anything I set my mind to; however, at that time, the things I was setting my mind on accomplishing were also things I already knew I could do well.
If you have a fear of stepping out on faith and taking a chance on something you want to do because of A, B, or C (by the way, these are your excuses) then somewhere along the way you stopped believing in yourself.
Side Note: You can choose faith over fear
When you start to dream big, God will show you things that are beyond your current state in life. A lot of people think they are just daydreaming or fantasizing about a life or things they only “wish” they could have, not realizing that what you see in your mind is also what you can experience in your life. When you start to believe – I mean really believe, is when you will start to see your[self] differently and once you do, the magic starts to happen.
Initially, the “magic” starts with a feeling because once your perspective changes, a change within will have already started to take place. If you have ever imagined doing something different in your life and could actually feel the feeling of being in that place or position, then you have actually experienced belief in yourself on a level in life that you are not currently on.
What happens with most people is they stop focusing on that vision that was given to them and return to their old ways of thinking. I was guilty of this for years and for the life of me, I could not understand why there was no change taking place. Until I finally understood the concept of changing the way I think, I lived in a perpetual state of just hoping something would change. I was stuck at the “hoping” level for what seemed like forever.
Once you really start to believe you can become who you desire to be, you will start to transform into that person.
I WILL become the person I want to be because I will do whatever it takes to get there. That’s right, I said those words to myself, but not before I believed I could do it. This is when you make a decision – a firm one that literally shifts your way of thinking. The words “I WILL” are the words that set things into motion because once again, the words you tell yourself cause an internal shift to occur. The best thing to do at this point is to take action and start working on achieving your goals. Notice that ideas will begin to come to you, seemingly from nowhere; however, those ideas are your road map for your journey to becoming the person you are supposed to be. This is the hard part because this is when all the work begins – hard work; but if you really want something bad enough, you will do the work no matter how hard it may be.
Side Note: Most of the time during the beginning stages of trying to reach your goals, you will have to go it alone.
There will be times that you won’t know if you are doing the right thing or doing things the right way.
This is when fear and doubt will creep in and try to stop you, but don’t stop. Anytime we make a decision to do something different, a part of your mind will fight to stay in the comfort zone. This is called “a test”.
Recognize this feeling of discomfort for what it is; unfortunately, most people don’t. Without being conscious of what is taking place, they unconsciously fall back into their old way of thinking, which can only lead to old patterns of behavior. Before you know it, you are back to living in a way you have been wishing you could get away from for so long.
When you begin to take steps to do your thing (insert your dream here), you will begin to act like the person you’re striving to become and if you continue to take consistent action, doing the things that bring you closer to your goals, you will start to become a different person – in your actions, as well as in your day to day interactions with others. People will leave your life and new people will start to show up. Know that you are growing when people begin to leave your life or things that used to interest you no longer do.
Know that you are on the right path when you become obsessed with creating the change you want to see.
Who I hope, believe, and say I will become can be seen in my day to day actions. I keep a pen and paper with me at all times because ideas, quotes, or maybe just words may start to come to mind throughout the day and I want to make sure I am always prepared.
The same holds true for you: At the moment you say “I will…” and believe it to be true for you – act on your beliefs and you will begin to change your life. The moment I said I will become a writer, I started writing. The moment I said I will have multiple streams of income, ideas and information begin to emerge and I immediately started to work on creating multiple streams of income. After years of being stuck in the confines of my mind and finally breaking free from my old ways of thinking, I made a decision to help others purposely transform the way they think in order to live a more fulfilling life. And, with that decision made, I started in whatever capacity I could.
Begin to see yourself differently and the things around you will change. You will be able to look back and see the change that has taken place in your life is directly related to the change that took place within your mind.
My words tell the world exactly how I see myself, even if, in some areas of my life, I’m not yet where I want to be. Those words are “I am”.
I AM an author and I AM here to serve others. I help transform lives through the written word or by way of speaking to people. I help others change the way they view themselves by changing the stories they tell themselves that do not serve them. It is my life mission to share with others what I have learned about how to change your mindset in order to change your life.
This is where I am in my thought process because I believe it to be true, even with me not yet reaching all of my goals. I believe I am all that I say I will become. I see myself as already being those things.
This is a bold move and takes courage but it is also a necessary part of the process of becoming all that you hope and believe you can be. This is when you must be willing to take the risk of failure which also means you risk the embarrassment that comes with failing.
Side Note: You will fail – a lot, but you can’t stop believing in yourself.
For example, when I first started blogging, I didn’t reach as many people as I desired. Another example: I started writing my book and halfway through, realized I must change my entire style of writing and approach before I can move forward to completion. There are snags that happen all the time but I am still who I believe I am. Period.
Failing or what appears to be a failure doesn’t matter. I don’t let that stop me and neither should you. You simply can’t care what other people think or how they may view you or the choices you make for your life. It doesn’t change who you are. The way you see yourself is non-negotiable and has to be unwavering. It should not change based on circumstances.
Also, keep in mind that when you start to gain momentum, it almost feels like you can’t stop. I love what I do so much that it doesn’t feel like work when I sit down to write. It feels like work when I have to stop and actually go to work at my job. Outside of working a day job, I work on the things that I love to do and will continue to do so until I reach the point where I can do what I love all the time.
To completely revamp your life, you must become a different person. Your perception of yourself will have to change dramatically in order to do so. When you are truly ready to change your life, you will become the person you see in your mind and and once this happens, nothing can stop you.
