Can’t we all just get along?
Rodney King
On March 2, 1991, almost 30 years ago, Rodney King ask the question “Can’t we all just get along?” after surviving a brutal beating by four police officers in a display of inhumane behavior that once again, would remind America that racism still permeated the air. The ugly truth that for a period of time, racism had simply been hiding in plain sight. At the time, we had no idea that sadly, 28 years later, that exact question would still be relevant and apply to modern day times.
I have been quiet at times, but not silent. There is a difference. Reflecting, and at the same time taking it all in, processing the chain of events that have recently taken place. It has been heart-breaking, heart-wrenching, and maddening all at the same time. I have always encouraged people to be confident in finding their purpose, not allowing fear to stop you, by any means necessary.
“By any means necessary”, words spoken by Malcolm X in 1964 during his speech concerning the plight of African Americans at the Founding Rally of the Organization of Afro-American Unity, eerily applies to the current circumstances we, as African Americans, are encountering. Sentiments of those words are being demonstrated in present day protest all across our nation nearly 56 years later.
I am clear about my purpose. It has been solidified by my own life experiences that have led me to become who I am – to use the written word and my spoken words to create change by impacting and challenging states of mind that may or may not be serving the best purpose for your life.
That is the point – to challenge you to become aware in order to become a better human being; to rise up and stand against anything, including toxic people or your own toxic mindsets, that may be interfering with, maybe even intercepting your purpose.
Yes, indeed, it is time to walk in your power. My focus has always been to focus on those individuals who are searching for their purpose, who walk in fear because they lack the confidence to boldly create their own path in life. Now is the time to take a stand and stop hiding behind the facade that all is right in the world when we know better. Now is the time to do your part to create lasting change. Whatever that looks like for you, now is the time to walk right past fear, load up on confidence, unpack your purpose, and get to work.
Gone are the days of doing only what society has always deemed as acceptable. Our society has and will continue to change and whether you realize it or not, it is going through an irreversible evolution.
Gone are the days of allowing your thoughts to be controlled by other people. This change has been in motion for a long time now, and I’m not just referring to black people. No, this change includes black, brown, and white people. From the rich to the poor, a change within the hearts and the minds of people who clearly desire to live a different kind of life than their ancestors is taking place right now.
Walk in Purpose
In my last article titled A Change is Coming written two days after the murder of George Floyd, I shared my thoughts on what I perceived as unstoppable actions and changes that were about to happen, which is exactly what is taking place right now. There was such a shift in the atmosphere that I could feel the change immediately. Within my soul and in my spirit I knew that this time, people standing on the side of truth were not only going to demand justice but would do so with an awakened power previously unbeknownst to them.
If you have not begun to do so, right now is the time to walk in power by walking in your purpose. There has never been a time so ripe with the necessary ingredients to make a positive impact that will change the world for the better. It is not a time to cower under societal pressure – to do and behave in ways that, more than likely, have kept you stuck in the same mindset for years. A mindset that has boxed you in with seemingly no escape, caged in your mind with the misconception that living a different lifestyle by creating a new path isn’t possible for you or your family.
When you understand how true change comes about then you also understand the basic concept that pressure creates change first within, eventually affecting change outwardly. If you are feeling the pressure of change pushing against the very fibers of your being then it is time to change. It is time to walk in power. It is time to start moving, and if you don’t know which way to move, start anyway and the path will be shown as you go along your journey to pursuing your purpose.

If the current events have lit a fire within you that makes you want to speak out and stand up for those who have been treated unfairly, then maybe it is time for you to walk in activism.
If you feel the need to create signs to spread your message in a march, then go protest. If you are a writer, then it is time to become the best writer you can be. Use your words to evoke emotion within the deepest parts of humankind’s heart creating a shift in their thinking that will make a positive impact on society. Whatever it is that you feel moved to do, then don’t hesitate.
Yes, indeed it is time for us to walk in power. Wasting time is simply not an option anymore. There is too much work to be done. The world needs you. Unfortunately, there are far too many people who refuse to wake up and accept that we need one another for our differences are what make the world go ’round. Failure to realize this by a society that is desperately in need of reform will only exasperate the problems we currently face.
At this point, those who do not desire to live peacefully within a diverse society where each and every person’s life matters and serves a purpose, regardless of their race, religious background, sexual orientation, or gender, are choosing to remain ignorant to the basic facts of life.
Find your purpose and you will find where your true power has been all along. Your purpose serves your why and will empower you to keep going even when it seems all hope is gone.
Walk in Confidence
In light of the recent events that have occurred, it appears to be a surge of confidence in people’s approach to addressing and standing for what they strongly believe in. People from all over the world (many of whom I wish I could personally meet and have a conversation with) are walking with confidence, both individually and collectively that is powerful. It is the kind of confidence that one has when there is a clear intention, belief, and knowing that the desired outcome will eventually become a reality.
When you are clear about your purpose and walk in the power of knowing the goals you wish to accomplish, it gives you a certain level of confidence. Remarkably, the more you walk in power, the more confident you become. And your confidence will continue to grow when it is being built upon an unshakable foundation of belief that what you stand for, what you do, and who you are will impact lives, ultimately impacting the world.
It is lamentable that we have created a society that was built upon the act of tearing down other people’s confidence. We see it even in the world of entertainment. The next big star rises and we sing all praises to them but can’t wait for the moment to tear them down; our society just can wait to tear into another person’s confidence.
We live in a society that is happy for you until you are actually doing better. These same people will admire what you do and how you do it as long as you aren’t doing better than them. They seek to tear down anyone who actually puts in the hard work and is deserving of a better quality of life. However, the tide is turning. It is high time for change and we are finally kicking fear in its face and walking with confidence, with a purpose, giving power to the people and stripping it from those that have abused the power once entrusted to them.
Are you willing and are you ready to challenge yourself to be bold enough to walk in the power you already possess? If so, move in a way that not only demands the kind of change that is needed, but also affirms you are granted the opportunity to live the kind of life you deserve to live, free from the injustices that continue to interrupt our lives without warning. Yes, indeed, it is time to walk in power.
As always, I would love to hear your thoughts. I believe it is necessary that we start to respectively have an open dialogue about the current turn of events that have taken place.
